    The love letter never died. It just got shorter, and it lives in your pocket.

    It doesn’t matter how busy you are — a single text sent at the right moment can change the temperature of an entire evening before either of you is home. A few words, and your partner knows exactly how much you want them. That’s mental foreplay, and it works on the imagination hours before anyone touches anyone.

    Instead of feeling like roommates, a few well-chosen messages can turn you back into secret playmates.

    Why a text works better than you’d expect

    Anticipation does most of the work. A message that lands at two in the afternoon has seven or eight hours to sit there and do nothing but be thought about. By the time you’re in the same room, the evening has already started — you’re just catching up with it.

    Writing also gives you something conversation doesn’t: a draft. Plenty of people who can’t say a particular sentence out loud can type it perfectly well. There’s no flinch to read on the other person’s face, no need to hold eye contact, and you get to choose your words instead of blurting them. For couples who find it hard to talk about what they actually want, a phone is often the easiest door into the room.

    And it’s reciprocal in a way that a grand romantic gesture isn’t. Flowers are lovely, but nobody has to answer them. A good text asks a question.

    Start much cooler than you think you should

    The most common mistake is opening at a heat you haven’t earned yet. A message that’s three steps past where the two of you currently are doesn’t read as bold — it reads as a surprise, and surprises are easy to fumble by text because there’s no tone of voice to soften them.

    Climb instead. Something like this, over a day or a week:

    • Appreciation. Notice something real and say it. “You looked unfairly good this morning and I’ve been distracted since.”
    • Memory. Point at something that already happened. “I keep thinking about Saturday night.”
    • Anticipation. Move it into the future without detail. “I’ve got plans for you later. That’s all you’re getting.”
    • Invitation. Ask rather than announce. “Is there something you’ve been wanting to try that you haven’t asked for?”
    • Specifics. Only once the answers have been warm. This is where you say what you actually intend to do.

    Read the replies before you climb. Short answers, or a change of subject, mean stay where you are or come down a step — not push harder. Enthusiasm reads clearly in a text and so does its absence.

    What to actually say

    “Be sexy over text” is useless advice. Here are the shapes that work, which you can fill with your own details:

    • The unfinished sentence. Stop somewhere deliberate. “I was going to tell you what I thought about in the shower this morning, but —”
    • The specific memory. Not “last night was great” but the one detail. The thing they did with their hands. What they said.
    • The instruction. Small, doable, and for later. “Wear the grey shirt tonight. No, I’m not explaining.”
    • The question you’d struggle to ask aloud. “On a scale of one to ten, how curious are you about—?” Numbers make an answer easy to give.
    • The countdown. “Four hours.” Nothing else. Send it again at two.

    Two things to avoid. Don’t narrate at length — a paragraph of description is a chore to read on a phone, and restraint is the whole medium. And don’t send anything you’d be uncomfortable seeing read back to you flatly, because that’s roughly how it will land if it arrives at a bad moment.

    Timing matters more than wording

    Mid-afternoon is the sweet spot. Early enough to sit with them, late enough that the working day is losing its grip.

    Avoid the obvious traps: first thing in the morning, when it competes with the alarm; the middle of a meeting you know about; and the twenty minutes after a difficult conversation, when it reads as a change of subject rather than an advance.

    One message that lands well beats six that don’t. This is not a volume business.

    Agree on the rules first

    This is the part the internet usually skips, and it’s the part that stops it going wrong.

    • Never on a work device. Employers can and do read anything on company phones and laptops, and there’s no undo.
    • Know who else sees the screen. Shared tablets, a car display that mirrors messages, notification previews on a lock screen sitting face-up on a desk. Turn previews off before you start, not after.
    • Photos are a separate decision. If you send them at all: no face, nothing identifiable in the background, and only ever to a person you’d still trust if the relationship ended badly. Anything digital can be screenshotted, and it never expires.
    • Agree a way to say “not now”. A dull message back — “in a meeting, tell me tonight” — should be completely normal and never sulked about. If declining is costly, the game stops being fun within a week.
    • What happens on the phone is between the two of you. Not a group chat, not a friend, not a funny story at a dinner party.

    Have that conversation once, in daylight, in about ninety seconds. Then forget about it and enjoy yourselves.

    Make a game of it

    The most reliable way to keep this going is to give it a shape, because “be spontaneous” is a rule nobody has ever successfully followed.

    • Alternate days. You open on Monday, they open on Tuesday. Removes the question of whose turn it is.
    • Three words. Both of you, once a day, exactly three words. The constraint does more for the imagination than free rein.
    • Twenty questions, one a day. One intimate question each morning, answered whenever. A slow-burn conversation that goes somewhere a single evening never would.
    • The wager. Bet on something ordinary — a match, the weather, who gets home first. The winner names the forfeit by text.

    See how naughty you can get with each other. That’s the whole point — flirting with your own partner, on purpose, the way you did before you lived together.

    When you want something they can hold

    A text is weightless, which is its charm and its limit. Sometimes the better move is something physical — a voucher tucked into a coat pocket or left on a pillow, to be cashed in whenever they choose.

    Here’s a way to put sensual teasing back into your foreplay. The butterfly tease makes your lover’s skin tingle and turns their whole body extra sensitive to your touch. It’s based on an ancient Chinese love game, described in Sexational Secrets by Susan Crain Bakos.

    You’ll need a few soft sable, artist or calligraphy brushes, some massage oil, and a blindfold — the blindfold isn’t optional as far as I’m concerned. It’s what turns a nice massage into something they can’t predict.

    The first time, keep your intentions secret. Don’t show the brushes. Hint at what you have in mind and let the anticipation build — the mental foreplay does half the work for you. I’ll describe it from a man pleasuring a woman, but it works just as well in every other direction.

    Setting up

    Candles, incense, soft music. Have her strip and lie on her back. Blindfold her, and ask her to stay as still as she can and trust you. Then stimulate her imagination before you touch her at all:

    “Pretend you are a field of flowers. Imagine a butterfly fluttering from one flower to another. You don’t know where the butterfly will land, or how long it will stay. When it finds a delicious flower, its long sleek tongue swirls and probes as it savours the sweet nectar — before flitting to the next flower for more.”

    Ask her to focus on feeling rather than working out what you’re doing. That instruction matters more than it sounds: the moment she starts predicting the brush, the effect collapses.

    The tease

    Start with a very light touch and vary the pressure later. Keep it apparently random — change the speed, the pressure, and how long you linger. Not knowing where the brush will land next is what makes her skin wait for it.

    Begin at the arch of one foot, then move straight to the other. Tickle between her toes, tease the tips. Flutter up to her ankles, calves and knees, then dart back to her feet with a firmer touch. From the soles of her feet, dash to her armpits, and rest — delicately — on a nipple.

    Pleasure points

    The ancient Chinese version targeted specific points said to cause immediate arousal:

    • The midpoint of the perineum
    • The Cinnabar field — a line of seven points from the navel to the pubic region
    • Breasts and nipples
    • The groin, in the crease between abdomen and thigh

    Personally I prefer to ignore the map and just play, tickling erogenous zones wherever I find them. The sensations are remarkable either way.

    Choosing brushes

    Any arts and crafts shop has a good selection of soft sable brushes, and the round ones work best. Buy a variety of lengths and thicknesses so you can experiment with different sensations. A set of Chinese calligraphy brushes is a cheap way to get a range of sizes at once.

    One practical warning: oil is very hard to wash out of a brush. Keep a separate set for the oiled half and save yourself the trouble.

    There are so many ways you can spice up your marriage bed without going out to a special store for items … send a list of 10 ordinary household items that can be creatively used in a passion session. You need to explain their use too.

    This contest is similar to our Sexual Sparks: Creative Sex Cards:

    • Shopping For Sex: any store can be viewed as a source for sexual accessories. The available products may not be designed for sex but many can be easily adapted or modified for your pleasure. Consider special uses for groceries, hardware, regular toys, games, crafts, fabrics, furniture, etc. Examine items from a pleasure perspective: how will it feel or how can it be used to stimulate each other?
    • Tactile Tactics: the texture of various objects can provide amazing sensual pleasures. When used erotically, even mundane items can be used for intimate delight. Consider different types of materials (soft, squishy, hard, smooth, coarse, etc.) or objects with sensual, stimulating shapes. Experiment and explore various erogenous zones over the entire body. Also see how the sensations change when your lover is blindfolded.

Some people enjoy Splooshing using other textured foods such as cooked spaghetti noodles, canned beans, pies, tapioca etc. as a messy whole body experience. Most foods will be either cool or room temperature but you can even warm some types in hot water (no microwaving) to avoid burning.
    • Fruit *: although still a food, different types of fruit have special sensual properties and can provide a refreshing snack in between sex sessions. Fruit smoothies eaten before hand can make semen taste sweet for improved oral sex. Strawberries and champagne is a classic combination for romance but slippery mango slices can be used to tease nipples or ear lobes sensually before licking them.     • Olive/Vegetable Oil: although this could be used as a quick substitute for lube, why bother – get the good vaginal and anal lubricants. Since vegetable oils are cheaper, they lend themselves for use in greater quantities – i.e. applying to your entire bodies. Get a large plastic tarp (or blow up pool) laid out on the floor or bed, a bottle of oil, and some old towels to cleanup with. Lovingly apply oil over your entire bodies, massage each other a bit then enjoy some slippery, intimate wrestling before having hot, slimy sex together. Don’t do this in the shower or bath – way too risky. Also check that the oil will not degrade the condoms you may be using.
    • Corn Starch: this substance has a very interesting feel to it. Try dropping small clumps of it onto your naked lover. Each splash of powder will create a subtle sensation. Allow them to enjoy the nuances of this sensory pleasure before stroking the powder around and onto their body.
    • Wooden Spoon: or other instrument (ping pong paddle, ruler, paint stirrer, etc.) for “warming a bottom” can be used for erotic punishment play. Use something that is light weight and start with a few gentle smacks followed by soothing strokes of your hand. If your lover is comfortable with it, increase the intensity slowly, each time massaging their buttocks in between. Once their bum is red hot, your desires for each other should match.
    • Pillows: can be used for erotic pillow fights together or to make some sex positions even more comfortable. Pile up a mound of sofa pillows and try out a few creative positions on it or build a “fort” covered with blankets and make love inside. Making love on a mountain of luxurious pillows is a special treat.
    • Hand Lotion: besides the obvious use for hand jobs, massage her feet with the creamy substance. Pay special attention to each toe – attempt to give her a toegasm. Then she can use her soft feet with some extra lotion to give him a foot job.
    • Exercise Ball: inflatable exercise balls are great fun to have sex on. Although doggie style is the easiest, try oral sex positions, intercourse arched over on your back (him with her straddling or her with him kneeling or straddling) or even a wheelbarrow style position. The bouncy, wobbly motion adds to the fun. I am still working out the best way to attach a dildo to one of these.
    • Fork & Spoon: the cold, smooth metal can create interesting sensations on different areas of the body. Drag the tines of the fork to lightly scratch and wake up the nerves. Or press it against a nipple and lick through the grooves. The smooth, cold, rounded portion of the spoon can be stroked lightly or even with a bit more pressure to create interesting sensations.
    • Plastic Water Bottle: can be used to create an ice dildo – we are talking the small drinking bottles of course. Freeze a filled bottle, cut the plastic off then rinse the ice under cool water to smooth, round and shape it into a nicely sized ice dildo. Use them for a few strokes before warming the vagina again with a penis or tongue. Alternate hot and cold as desired. You might think popsicles would be easier but use these only on the outer body – never use these around or in the vagina *.
    • Electric Toothbrush: create intense vibrations for clitoral and nipple stimulation. Use the back of the head and not the bristles of course. The sonic versions offer even more intense vibrations. Great for when you travel – don’t want those X-ray machines discovering your heavy duty toys. The water spraying teeth cleaners seem intriguing too.
    • Clothes Pegs: these little gadgets are ready made nipple clamps. Of course, creative erotic pain play doesn’t need to stop with just nipples.
    • Silky Rope: although you might not have this just laying around the house, you can easily pick up some soft, silky smooth rope at your nearest hardware store. Buy four clips and appropriately sized eye screws too. Cut the rope into four pieces, singe the ends to stop it fraying, attach a clip to one end and insert the eye screws into the bottom of the bed (or wall). Hope you get the mental image without a picture. Loosely wrapping the rope around a wrist or ankle can create a safe bondage scenario without actually using knots.
    • Chrome Chain: again, not something you usually have lying around the house but easily available, smooth-link, chrome chain can be cut into small sections to make exotic “heavy metal” lingerie. Some strips of leather and an eyelet punch or rivet gun will also come in handy.
    • Soap & Shampoo: showering and washing each other can be a very sensual and highly erotic activity.     • Old Clothing: strategically cut the seams on old items of underwear and clothing. Then engage in an intense roleplaying scenario that involves having your clothing torn off. You can also use them as a form of virtual bondage – while standing naked, eyes closed, arms outstretched, palms facing downward, balance a marble on each of your lover’s hands between their fingers. Just note that some candles burn at higher temperatures so always test on your fore arm first. Candles in a jar allow the melted wax to build up and cool slightly.
